Autumn is Your Seasonal Weapon
Updated: Feb 18, 2021
Now that summer has drawn to a close it is not uncommon to hear talk of “winter’s chill” even before the first official day of fall. It’s not all snowballs and icicles following the glow of summertime, after all! Change can be trying but there are ways to manage and thrive in each new situation. Autumn in the Haliburton Highlands is the place you’ll want to be to experience the best of this seasonal change in Ontario.
Autumn's iconic transformation across our Haliburton Highlands landscape is truly awe-inspiring. We gush over explosive saffron yellows and crimson reds, the multi-colours upon one leaf are kept and pressed as treasures amongst book pages. Nature’s dance from summer to fall is one of Haliburton’s grandest magic tricks and it’s yours for the exploring. The beauty and emotional response we have toward this seasonal change can be captured and held and here’s how: be present.
Join us in the Haliburton Highlands for the smells, feelings, and experiences of autumn. You’ll find the clock doesn’t tick near as fast. You’ll find joy in places that you may have otherwise overlooked. You’ll find the energy inspiring. Do your wintery-self a favour and make lasting memories this fall!
Find your vantage point
As the epicentre for Canada’s Largest Hiking Festival, you can be sure that we have beautiful places to walk, bike, hike, and run here in Haliburton. The Ridge Trail Hiking Network (see these hikes under "Township of Algonquin Highlands) is a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, especially this time of year. You can experience breathtaking views on these well-marked trails, with photo-worthy lookouts, allowing for a view of technicolour only birds and tree climbers would otherwise enjoy.
Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve is our pride and joy for outdoor exploration. Their hiking and biking trails are graded from easy to difficult, packed with multiple opportunities to seek colourful vantage points from high to low.
Head over to the Minden Pharmasave (110 Bobcaygeon Rd) or the Haliburton Framing and Photo (177 Highland St Unit 1) when you get off the trail to get your photos printed off at their Kodak photo kiosks! These images are not to be kept virtual. Put your favourite shot up on your fridge, in a frame on your desk at work, and allow the colour and the memory be experienced throughout the year.
Participate in the celebration
With the Haliburton Farmer’s Market in Minden and Haliburton running until Thanksgiving you have the opportunity to taste the fall. Pies, soups, stews, casseroles, lattes and so on can be created back in the kitchen, all inspired by the goodies you can purchase from our local purveyors.
On The Studio Tour you will take to the winding roads, travelling across this sublime County, to visit the open-door studios and showrooms of our talented artists and craftspeople. Fall leaves will line the walkways into unique spaces, often carrying aromas of hot apple cider and baked treats.
Fall Festival at Abbey Gardens celebrates autumn in the youthful way you remember as a kid with a pumpkin patch, sunflower maze, wagon rides and more! For the grown up in you, Abbey Gardens caters, with live music and wood-fired pizza at one of our local breweries, Haliburton Highlands Brewing. Be a kid or bring your kids for the day and connect with the playfulness of fall.
